Final edition
I’ve made the decision to step back from press work – my first newspaper jobs were as a freelance in the early 80s. I then worked regularly for nationals and local papers across Hampshire, the work took me to some amazing places and I met some great people so I look back with fondness – I’ll miss the exciting moments.
It seems odd leaving it behind, but papers are sinking so I’m hopping ashore before they take on more water. I chose the 100th Remembrance service in Petersfield as my last press job – freelancers never get a great send-off, but they did shut the street for me and organise a big parade and a bugler, so that was nice.
The following week my pictures were hideously-butchered into odd-shaped holes, without a byline. And that tells you everything about the newspaper business in 2018.
RIP old friend.
