Her Lovers

A spoken word piece by Innes Marlow

Her number of lovers was four.
Sometimes she thought
she should have had more,
but love was all she sought.

First a boy from the stable,
young and clumsy but able.
They met in a sweltering May.
She can still feel the hay.

Then she met James at a dance,
within a week posted to France.
He wrote but didn’t come home.
She was totally lost and alone.

Crushed by the shock and pain,
she didn’t expect to find love again,
but William, a beautiful man,
took her back to where it began.

And then Robert was the last,
he helped her forget the past.
A mischievous glint in his eye.
The four men who made her cry.
